Life in a castle

The atmosphere and the staff was absolutely superb showing hospitality usually reserved for royalty! Our stay could not have been more gracious.

Might have been nice in 1970 when it was updated last but an absolute mess now.

Absolute crap. The most tired and rundown place I've been in a while. They claim to be 5 star. What a joke. The room we were given has no A/C. The furniture is all damaged and scratched. Not real wood, just laminate. The hinges holding in the bathroom door were missing screws and half falling off. All of the furniture scratched badly and damaged. The shower mat was moldy. Grout missing in shower. Carpet was gross. Pillows were horrible stiff foam, when we asked for down and something softer they had nothing. Went to dinner at the ala carte restaurant and at least the food was very good but service was horrible. My dad was using a walker and wearing his oxygen and standing right next to me and when they finally found my name on the list the waiter just turned around and said "follow me" and promptly walked down some steps without even bothering to ask if we needed to use the wheelchair lift in the other direction. Rest of service was no better. After eating we sat for 15 minutes with empty plates in front of us before we had to ask to have them cleared. I was given half a glass of water and pitcher not left on table. No on ever asked to refill it or came by to check. It was not crowded at all. There was probably 1 server per table occupied at the time. Absolutely shocking for a supposed 5 star castle hotel. This place looks like it was remodeled in the 70's and not touched since then.

Hire some more staff for the restaurant

The good,,,,,rooms are very comfortable, clean and well appointed. This hotel was chosen for us as part of a package deal for a hunting experience. You can walk into Pitlochry easily from the hotel. We had breakfast as part of our package which was nice. We ate dinner in the restaurant one night and the food was very good as well. Service at the front desk / concierge was top notch.
The bad - service in the restaurant was horribly slow. When we ate breakfast early, they were on top of things because it was relatively empty. The morning we ate later was horrible - understaffed and inexperienced as well. The night we ate dinner they had only 2 waitresses for a filled dining room - our waitress was trying her best but she just had too many tables to take care of. Believe me, she was hustling. We canceled our reservations for "Pod Dining" the next night because of the service, even though our meals were delicious.
We also had tea there the first day we arrived. It was OK, very disappointing. Certainly not worth the price they charged. Guess our expectations were too high on that - their "High Tea' was no where near up to the hype.

Lovely turret room but restaurant service very patchy

Room excellent - have always wanted a room with a turret! Great place to sit and read the weekend newspapers...
Welcome excellent - with concierge kitted out in tartan.
Only disappointment was service in restaurant.
Breakfast welcome was to be ignored by a young man at the lectern who then walked us to an area of unoccupied tables and left us to our own devices. Tables relatively small so important to clear tables efficiently - that was patchy at best.
At evening meal we were presented with a wine list and told quite a few things (not specified) were not available but they will see what they can do once we had chosen. We chose and ordered wine and food. Starters arrived. No wine. Chased. Told wine we had selected was not available. They then brought an alterative but by this time we had finished our starters. Then, when we finished our mains, we sat and sat waiting for plates to be cleared and desert menu offered. But we gave up in the end and left. All rather unprofessional.
Would have given 5 stars for room and 3 stars for restaurant so 4 starts is my average...

Charming setting and excellent servic

I had high expectations before I came. The experience surpassed my standards with such excellent meals, touring and friendly service on top of it. The setting is magical. You can take walks along the lake and to the town. My driver was a tour guide who was quite knowledgeable of the castles and the history. David is with B-Line Taxi, and really added to the depth of my experience.
