Stunning location and a new Omakase ( Chef Table) experience

Incredible, stunning location and now tasty menu
We arrived at Toya station in the afternoon. The shuttle was there as promised ( small station only one exit, shuttle is obvious with WE on the side). We were whisked off to the hotel, about a 20minute Journey. The welcome at the hotel was typically Japanese efficient and friendly, at reception there was a person there dedicated to our check in. The view of the lake as we walked in was incredible, once we got to our room with the massive panoramic windows the view was out of this world.! We immediately filled our balcony hot bath, had a green tea and enjoyed the view. At about 5pm we walked into the local village, about a 15 minute walk, the few shops ( there is a small grocery shop) were just closing, and the sun was setting. Enjoyed the views again, and walked back to the hotel( note there are two ways up and down one steep and one gentle) Straight into the hotel restaurant where we enjoyed a light meal ( that we preordered at reception) Back to our room for a rest before visiting the more public onsen down stairs, we both enjoyed our time in the very hot baths. The outdoor part of the hotel onsen is a real treat with yes incredible views. Finished with a tea ( always available) and then we went to our room. The next morning we woke at 5.28 AM and enjoyed the sunrise. The rooms I believe are all south east facing. For the next few days, we took as many of the walks in the surrounding forest as we could, enjoyed the local shops, especially the local general store and coffee shop, and of course the Onsens.
The hotel is first rate in many ways, however many of the commentators have expressed negative thoughts regarding the food. I want to point out there is now a new head chef that is doing an excellent job of expanding the choices at the restaurants. An Omakase has opened with the new highly experienced Executive Chef Takayuki Uehara designing the unique menu and cooking in front of us, the new Executive Chef, is also a joy to watch, and so much fun as he explains what he is doing. I had sea squirt for the first time. The range of sea dwellers we tasted was incredible, and the beef we had was the best , literally melting in the mouth. Twice we had dinner with him running this show. The breakfast menu has expanded as well. They are as all the hotels we visited limited by not enough staff, but I suspect if the hotel can keep this chef and get some help below, there is considerable room for change. If the hotel empowers the chef and restaurant staff the hotel could be world class, it is the missing link.

With such steep price tag we expected more from the hotel, but its Very disappointing. Meals are vey limited and kitchen close at 7pm, hence we have to prepare cup noodles. Public Onsen seems to be just heated tap water. Nothing great about this place.

this is not the accommodation you are looking for, ever.

Horrible experience. Expensive, dirty and inaccessible. DO NOT COME HERE. DO NOT LET THE PHOTOS FOOL YOU. Find one at lake Toya onsen town, Shikotsu or Jigokutani
Hotel room design is dysfunctional and dangerous for children.
Good:
1. Sucks away your hard earned money
Bad
1. Everything

Stayed in the hotel for 2 nights (2 rooms) in July.
Pro: beautiful hotel, great views, good breakfast (didn’t eat dinner there as the menu is not to our liking)
Con: as mentioned by other guests, the room is only suitable for couples. There is no hanging rack in the shower room so there is no way to dry and dress yourself without ‘exposing’ yourself. Fortunately we read the reviews and brought our own hooks to stick to the shower room wall. A simple permanent fix and i don’t understand why can’t the hotel do something about it. The design of the basin tap is also quite stupid. The tap is so close to the bottom of the sink that you even have to tilt the glass to fill water. The nearest convenient store is a 5 mins drive away. But it is up slope and very dark at night. Fortunately we are driving so not an issue. But will be a pain if going on public transport.

Does not justify the price tag

For JPY 80,000, I would expect to have much better services.
To be fair, the room, public onsen, and lobby was nice.
We can understand there would be bugs as this place is supposed to be a resort type accommodation, but the private outdoor tub should be cleaned before our arrival? It felt like the tub has not been used in a while.
There are white stuff sticking to the side of the wood, we are not sure if that’s waterproof layer or whatsoever but we are not getting in for sure.
While dinner and breakfast were included, again the food was a failure, the steak was obviously overcooked and tasted like it was microwaved to reheat as it was rubbery.
When the waitress came to take the dishes she was surprised to find the remaining of the jerky (Yes it was that rubbery). I told the waitress the steak was way overcooked AND OF COURSE she did not offer any alternatives, which I would expect from a hotel with such price tag. Anyhow we didn’t make a scene as we have lost appetite anyway.
In conclusion we would not recommend this hotel.
